Sun, sea, sand and supercars… points on the agenda as Paddock heads to Portimão for British GT
Paddock Motorsport’s crews have their eyes firmly set on a pair of strong results, and perhaps even a trophy or two for their hand luggage, as the Intelligent Money British GT Championship makes its first-ever visit to Portimão in Portugal this weekend.
Both Paddock’s McLaren 720S GT3 Evo and Artura GT4 will make the trip down to the Autodromo do Algarve for round seven of the championship, and all four drivers are confident of a strong outing in the sun.
Mark Smith and Martin Plowman will once again take the wheel of the ever-improving 720S GT3 Evo, while Kavi Jundu and Tom Rawlings will again share the Artura GT4 that will resume its search for a breakthrough podium finish.
Both cars have shown considerable promise across recent British GT rounds, but haven’t had the luck to match. The GT3 crew has made big strides in pace since a refresh of the McLaren’s differential and gearbox, with Smith and Plowman knocking on the door of a top-six finish in the ultra-competitive field on more than one occasion. The pair have scored GT3 Pro-Am points in every outing so far this season.
On the GT4 side, both Rawlings and Jundu have shown podium-challenging speed across the season, but a string of misfortune means they haven’t managed to mount the rostrum just yet, but the trip to the 2.9-mile Algarve circuit gives another chance for them to shine. They will also be boosted by having the services of 2019 British GT4 champion Tom Canning present in the garage this weekend and working with them during Friday’s test.
From the GT3 crew, Martin Plowman says: “Portimão is a great circuit. It’s a nice change of scenery in the calendar for this season. On the GT3 side of the garage, we’re looking to finally deliver on the progress we’ve been making the last few events. We’ve been methodically unlocking performance out of the car, we just need to put a whole weekend together now. We’ve been fast at various times during a weekend, and we’ve always moved forward during the races, but getting it right in qualifying is the last piece of puzzle to nailing a good result.”
Kavi Jundu, of the GT4 pairing, says: “I really like Portimão, it’s a great track. We tested with the old 570S GT4 there at the start of the year and it’s very fast, flowing and challenging. There’s a lot of elevation change and some blind corners, so it’s a real thrill to drive. We haven’t driven the Artura there yet, but it should suit the track as it’s a great-handling car. A lot will depend on us getting the car in the right performance window. This being a new track a lot of teams are going in blind, and it’ll be about who finds the best balance with their car first. Tom and I have shown some really good pace and potential already this year, and if it hadn’t have been for things outside our control like badly-timed safety cars or damage early in races then we’d likely have been on the podium already. We can feel it’s close, so hopefully this weekend we can bring it all together and get some silverware.”
The British GT race weekend at Portimão gets underway with testing on Friday ahead of two free practice sessions on Saturday. Qualifying is scheduled for 14:45 on Saturday, with the three-hour race set to get underway at 12:45 on Sunday. With Portugal sharing a time zone with the UK, there is no alteration in timing from local for viewers in the UK.
Live timing will be available all weekend via TSL Timing, with qualifying and the race being shown live on the GT World YouTube channel.
