Paddock Motorsport’s trio of British GT entries will resume their hunt for silverware when the championship roars into Donington Park this weekend, with a second three-hour endurance event giving plenty of opportunity to shine.
Paddock will again feature a busy garage, with the McLaren GT3 crew of Mark Smith and Martin Plowman accompanied by the McLaren Artura and Mercedes-AMG GT4 entries shared by Alex Walker/Blake Angliss and Ed McDermott/Matt Cowley respectively. In total, Paddock will be competing in three of British GT’s four classes, and all three crews have eyes on scoring big this weekend.
The last round at Silverstone brought many positives for the team, with Smith and Plowman at one stage running second overall and showing frontrunning pace, only to be denied by bad luck with strategy. Likewise, the Artura of Walker and Angliss was well in the fight for a class podium across the three hours before an unfortunate penalty meant they had to settle for fifth at the flag. However, it’s clear the crew has the potential to fight for podium places each time they line up on the grid.
The Mercedes-AMG of McDermott and reigning British GT4 champion Cowley has suffered a troubled start to the year, with a string of technical niggles holding the drivers back. The car was ruled out of the opening weekend at Oulton Park by mechanical issues, and then electrical gremlins hindered it at Silverstone. With the machine refreshed and ready, both drivers will be hoping to get themselves into the fight in a race that traditionally favours the GT4 Pro-Am crews due to their lower minimum pit stop times against the Silver-graded cars.
Running to the same format as Silverstone, the single three-hour race gives great scope for strategic innovation. With no set pit window, three mandatory driver changes and the rule that no driver can rack up more than 100 minutes at the wheel, teams are free to run a multitude of strategies to find the fastest way to the chequered flag.
This weekend 38 cars will take the start, with 20 GT3s mixed with 18 GT4s. Donington’s fast sweeps and multiple pinch points always provide high drama for GT cars running door-to-door.
From the GT3 team, Martin Plowman says: “We’re heading to Donington confident of getting a strong result. The first two rounds of the season have proven we have the pace in the car, and the whole team has taken a great step forwards this season. Donington is perhaps the track Mark knows best, and he’s always had great pace there. His driving at Silverstone was quite exceptional during that tricky first stint, going toe-to-toe with professional drivers and holding his own. I’m sure he’ll translate that into a great performance at Donington too. As a team, we’ve got eyes on the podium places in all three cars.”
Blake Angliss from the Artura GT4 says: “I’m really looking forward to getting back in the car at Donington, because at Silverstone we showed so much potential. It feels like we’ve shown people what we can do and what we’re about as a team, and we want to keep that going. We’re improving the car with every outing, and as drivers we’re finding new ways to unlock extra pace, so we want to hit the ground running at Donington. It’s a fast and flowing track, which suits the Artura as we don’t have the most power, but we do have strong aero and grip, so it’s about keeping those minimum numbers up and carrying speed. The potential is definitely there not just to go for the Silver podium, but also the overall, we just need to iron out little issues and stay out of trouble. I know Alex is confident ahead of this weekend, and Donington is my local track so I’m aiming high. If we can run clean for the three hours, we’ll be in the mix.”
Ed McDermott of the Mercedes-AMG crew says: “It’s been a difficult start to the season for us. Through no fault of the team or drivers our championship hopes have been significantly hampered by non-starts at Oulton and ABS failure at Silverstone. That’s been hugely frustrating as both Matt and I believe we could have had some great results already by this point of the year. Still, with nothing to lose now we are fully focused on getting the maximum out of driver and car at Donington.”
The third round of the British GT Championship gets underway with twin practice sessions on Saturday May 25 before qualifying at 16:00. Sunday starts with a quick warm-up session, before the race start at 13:00. All sessions will feature live timing, with qualifying and the race shown live on the GT World YouTube channel.
