It’s been a long wait, but Paddock Motorsport’s twin McLaren crews head into the resumption of the Intelligent Money British GT Championship at Brands Hatch this weekend with strong scores in their sights.
With a full seven weeks having passed since the championship’s last outing at the Autodromo do Algarve, much of the summer recess has been spent getting both of Paddock’s McLaren GT machines into tip-top condition after a challenging trip to Portugal.
The 720S GT3 Evo of Mark Smith and Martin Plowman had looked on for its best result of the season during the three-hour race at Portimão before it was needlessly hit, causing both rear bodywork damage and breaking a wheel, forcing an unplanned pit stop.
The Artura GT4 of Kavi Jundu and Tom Rawlings was also running impressively after the team had made a breakthrough in setup – and also toiled to replace the gearbox on Saturday, a feat that earned Paddock British GT’s Team of the Weekend Award – until a fire in the engine bay put a sad end to the car’s race.
Since then both McLarens have been fully overhauled back at base to be ready to fight again at Brands. The 2.3-mile Grand Prix Circuit in Kent can be a bit of an outlier in the calendar, due to its noise restrictions forbidding teams to test on the full circuit ahead of the weekend, so the entire 32-car British GT field will be learning as they go during Saturday practice.
Heading into the eighth round of the season, Smith and Plowman sit 10th in the GT3 Pro-Am Drivers’ Championship and have so far scored points in every race this year, although there’s no hiding the fact they deserve more after some fine performances that were denied by sheer misfortune beyond their control.
In GT4, Jundu and Rawlings will resume their quest for the Pro-Am podium, having shown more than enough speed to be challengers. They run fifth in the GT4 Pro-Am standings.
From the GT3 crew, Mark Smith says: “Brands Hatch is going to be an incredible test. This will be my first time at this track, and without the benefit of a Friday test day – so off-track preparation is going to be key. Thankfully, Plowey is always a huge resource, and the team always starts us with a very good car. If I'm able to get up to pace early in the race, stay clean, and hand over the car to Plowey in decent position, I suspect we'll watch him pick off a few places and bring home a good finish.”
Tom Rawlings, from the GT4 Artura team, says: “I’m really looking forward to getting on track at Brands, it’s a great circuit and I’ve been doing a lot of simulator work ahead of the weekend to get myself up to speed, despite the lack of testing there. I think the Artura GT4 will go well round there, and I know how hard the team has worked to get the car ready after Portimão. That retirement was a real shame as we made some really good steps with the setup that weekend, finding extra grip and increasing our cornering speed. The car felt great before we had to stop, so hopefully we can keep making gains this weekend and get ourselves in the fight for the big points.”
Action for round eight of the Intelligent Money British GT Championship gets underway with two free practice sessions on Saturday, September 9, ahead of qualifying at 15:55. Sunday’s two-hour race is scheduled for 13:30. All sessions will feature live timing via TSL-Timing.com, with a live stream for both qualifying and the race on the GT World YouTube channel. The race will also be shown live on Sky Sports F1.
