Paddock Motorsport heads into this weekend’s Intelligent Money British GT Championship showpiece – the Silverstone 500 – aiming to push forward following an impressive start to the campaign at Oulton Park.
Paddock will once again field a twin McLaren attack, with a 720S GT3 for Mark Smith and Martin Plowman, and a new Artura GT4 to be shared by Kavi Jundu and Tom Rawlings.
Despite never having visited Oulton Park before, Smith put on a star turn during the opening two races of the season over Easter Monday, helping the Paddock GT3 to a brace of top-10 finishes to score some healthy points. And now, with Silverstone being a more known circuit to Smith, he and Plowman have their eyes set on another strong performance.
They will however face some stiff competition, with the showpiece three-hour Silverstone 500 event attracting the biggest British GT entry for the last 11 years with 24 GT3 cars (the biggest entry since 2014) amongst the total 43-car grid.
Paddock’s GT4 crew probably should have left Oulton Park with at least one trophy, after the new Artura GT4 impressed on its domestic race debut. After two strong qualifying sessions, Jundu and Rawlings finished race one fourth in class, but could so easily have been winners had it not been for the timing of a safety car around their pit stop. Some balance problems in the changing conditions of race two caused some delays, but the duo still finished just off the class podium. Both drivers are hoping to go at least one better this weekend.
GT3 driver Mark Smith said: “Silverstone is going to be an incredibly interesting race, after coming off of the completely different style of track at Oulton Park. My first lap ever at Oulton Park was on Friday in the first practice session, and I was happy with how I was able to come up to a decent pace by the second race, and in the wet. Oulton Park in particular feels like having a lot of laps there is of great benefit. I'm coming into Silverstone with about 40 laps there, so I anticipate that Friday will be more about refining my approach than about starting from scratch. Silverstone is also a track with run-off, so trying different lines carries slightly less risk, which can help with coming up to speed as well. I know Plowey is quick at Silverstone, and he is a great coach, so hopefully we can surprise some people there!"
Tom Rawlings, of the GT4 crew, said: “I’m feeling good ahead of Silverstone. Kavi and I are working really well together and I think our driving compliments each other, and it’s so good to be back with the Paddock team for this year – it’s like being back home! The new Artura GT4 was really impressive at Oulton Park, and I think it will suit Silverstone perfectly as it’s very strong on top-end speed so it should come into its own on the larger tracks. Silverstone is also a special track for me as it’s where I took my first Mini Challenge JCW victory, so I have good memories of the place. The aim for this weekend is to get ourselves onto the podium. We would have taken home some silverware at Oulton if it hadn’t been for a bit of bad luck, so hopefully we can have a quick and clean weekend and get right at the sharp end in GT4.”
The second round of the Intelligent Money British GT Championship gets underway with two practice sessions on Saturday ahead of qualifying at 16:00. Sunday’s three-hour race is scheduled to begin at 12:20. Both qualifying and the race will be streamed live on the GT World YouTube channel.
