Martin Plowman, Kelvin Fletcher & Paddock Motorsport - British GT overall race winners for the first time!
In a crazy, interrupted race on Easter Monday, our #11 McLaren 720S GT3 came through the field to take an amazing victory all the way from P14 on the grid.
Martin Plowman and Kelvin Fletcher both put in stunning drives in the second race at Oulton Park to give the Imagine Holidays sponsored car our first ever overall win in GT3; finishing third on the road was enough to take the victory on the corrected times as the front two both had penalties to be applied.
The first race of the day had ended in disappointment when a puncture forced us out of the points, but there was clearly more pace than there had been on Saturday, which both Plowman and Fletcher would show in the second race. Plowman started the race and started it well, moving up to P10 on the first lap at Cascades, and then taking P9 in a frantic battle with Scott Malvern.
Then came chaos - rain was starting to pour and cars were starting to pit when two heavy crashes resulted in first a safety car and then a red flag. Some confusion followed, but since the red flag was thrown during the pitstop window, when we got going again it was with Kelvin Fletcher in the car, going from P7 with 20 minutes to make further progress.
That quickly became P4, leaving only Loggie, Balfe and Flewitt ahead. However, Loggie and Balfe both had success penalties to be added on at the end of the race meaning that the race win was up for grabs, if someone could finish less than seven seconds off the lead.
Fletcher passed Flewitt for third with 10 minutes to go, but with a 10 second gap between him and the leader Loggie. He pushed and pushed, and set qualifying lap after qualifying lap in effort to narrow that gap down. It was down to just over seven seconds with two minutes to go, but as Loggie and Balfe hit traffic, it was significantly under that margin. Fletcher crossed the finish line right behind the pair, comfortably securing the win - although he wasn't actually sure until he got out of the car.
A historic weekend for Paddock Motorsport, who were also running two cars in the British GT Championship for the first time. Sadly, it was not an ideal weekend for the GT4 crew of Ashley Marshall and British GT debutant Moh Ritson. Finishing only ninth in the first race, the second race ended prematurely when Ritson was hit from behind at Shell Oils, putting him into the barriers and out of the race. Fortunately, Moh was OK after a fairly heavy impact.
The GT3 win puts Paddock in third place in the overall standings after the first two rounds.
