Paddock Motorsport is aiming high with its twin McLarens as the opening round of the Intelligent Money British GT Championship at Oulton Park approaches this Easter weekend.
Paddock will once again field two cars in the championship, with the entries split between the GT3 and GT4 categories. American driver Mark Smith will be making his full-season debut aboard the team’s McLaren 720S GT3, and will be partnered by Paddock team principal Martin Plowman.
The team will also bring McLaren’s new Artura GT4 to the grid, with the promising pairing of Kavi Jundu and Tom Rawlings confirmed the share the new-generation car. Jundu was a class winner on his British GT debut with the team at Donington last year, while Rawlings brings significant experience of GT4 competition from both the GT Cup and British GT.
With a car in each class, Paddock will be fighting for glory on both fronts within British GT’s sell-out 36-car entry, with 18 cars fighting it out in each class. The level of competition this year looks set to be extremely high, and the two one-hour sprint races around the tight and twisty Oulton Park track always provides a tough challenge for teams and drivers, but the entire Paddock Motorsport crew feels ready to fight at the front of the nation’s best GT crews.
Professional GT3 driver, Martin Plowman says: “I love the start of a new season. It’s that mixture of anticipation, excitement and opportunity that really gets you going! Oulton Park this year should be something else, with 36 cars on the grid and some truly world-class drivers, whoever wins the championship this year will undoubtedly have earned it! From our part, I feel we’re in good shape to go out and fight alongside the best. As a team we’ve invested heavily in both our machinery and strengthening our technical crew and I believe we’re a match for any team in that pitlane. From a driving point of view, Mark has been very impressive so far. He’s got raw speed, listens and learns well and he’s adapted to the McLaren GT3 so quickly. I think he’ll be one to watch in the Am field this year. I feel as a pairing we have the potential to score strong results from the moment the lights go out.”
Kavi Jundu, of the McLaren Artura GT4 entry, says: “I’m really looking forward to getting the season underway at Oulton Park, and I think we can aim high from the very beginning. There will unquestionably be a learning curve because we have a brand-new car in the Artura GT4, a new team of drivers in myself and Tom, so everything has to take a little time to gel together. We’ve yet to find that silver bullet of setup for the Artura to make sure we’re getting the maximum from the car, but hopefully nobody else has found it yet either, so there could be quite a lot of trial and error across the entire field, and a lot of variables. I love Oulton Park – it’s a brilliantly old-school circuit and getting a good lap around there takes some real bravery. I believe that we’ve got a great package that will be very competitive, and we can be aiming for class wins from the very start.”
