The Intelligent Money British GT Championship season reaches its halfway point at Snetterton this weekend, with Paddock Motorsport’s drivers hoping the weekend can kick-start a strong run to the finish.
Paddock will once again field its McLaren 720S GT3 Evo for Mark Smith and Martin Plowman, with Kavi Jundu and Tom Rawlings handling the team’s new McLaren Artura GT4.
Both crews have made significant progress across recent race weekends, with Smith and Plowman identifying a technical issue that had been limiting the GT3, and Jundu and Rawlings making great gains in setup and operational knowledge of the new-for-2023 Artura GT4.
During the last event at Donington Park, Paddock’s engineers identified a fault with the GT3’s differential and gearbox, with a huge team effort being required to replace the entire rear assembly across the second practice session in order to be ready for qualifying. That should have reaped big benefits too, with Smith and Plowman heading for their best result of the year so far before being robbed of seventh place after contact from another car and a puncture.
In GT4, both Jundu and Rawlings have found increased pace thanks to some productive test days aboard the new Artura. Bad luck has haunted the pair for much of the year, and early contact and a drive-through penalty again denied them a shot at the podium last time out. However, the signs are there that the pair can be ones to watch both this weekend, and for the remainder of the season as they hunt their first big GT4 silverware as duo.
Smith and Plowman currently sit 11th in the GT3 Pro-Am points, with Jundu and Rawlings running fifth in GT4 Pro-Am, and both pairings have it all to play for with two short, sharp one-hour sprint races on the agenda in Norfolk this weekend.
GT3 racer Mark Smith said: “I’m really looking forward to Snetterton with the hope that this can be the race weekend where our actual pace determines our finishes, and not something beyond our control like contact or a mechanical issue. We made a load of progress with the car at Silverstone, which made it so much better to drive with the new differential and I could really attack during the last race. The car also looked fast during last week’s test at Snetterton [when Plowman drove for the day to work on setup], so we should be set up for success. It’s time to go out there and deliver a good finish!”
GT4 racer Tom Rawlings added: “I’m really looking forward to this weekend. I feel like we made some really good steps forward with both the setup and the drivability of the new Artura at Donington Park, and it was only a bit of bad luck at the start that really held us back. Kavi’s been driving really well and I’m feeling more and more comfortable in the car each weekend, so things are moving in the right direction. The one-hour sprint races are great, and tend to favour the Pro-Am crews in GT4. We could easily have been on the overall podium in the sprints at Oulton Park but for some misfortune with the safety car, so we could just as easily spring a surprise this weekend. Either way, a class podium is definitely within reach.”
Action for the fourth round of the Intelligent Money British GT Championship gets underway with two free practice sessions on Saturday morning, before qualifying at 16:10. Sunday gets going with a morning Warm-up session before race one at 11:25 and race two at 16:20. Both qualifying and the races will be streamed live via the GT World YouTube channel, while live timing will be available all weekend at TSL-Timing.com.
