Paddock Motorsport heads into the third round of the Intelligent Money British GT Championship at Donington Park this weekend determined to turn the tables in both the GT3 and GT4 classes at the team’s home circuit.
Paddock will once again field its McLaren 720S GT3 Evo for Mark Smith and Martin Plowman, with the new Artura GT4 being handled by Kavi Jundu and Tom Rawlings. The third round of the season offers a reset at Paddock’s home circuit, Donington Park, and the first appearance this season for the two-hour race format.
The opening two events of the year at Oulton Park and Silverstone both forced Paddock’s crews to fight against the odds. After two battling recovery drives into the points at Oulton Park by Smith and Plowman, Silverstone brought a new challenge when Smith was the innocent victim of a mistimed lunge early in the race, forcing the pair to complete the three-hour race with worsening damage to their McLaren. Regardless, they still managed to see the chequered flag, and hold on to their top-10 place in the GT3 drivers’ standings.
Only bad luck denied Jundu and Rawlings a GT4 podium at Oulton, and at Silverstone setup issues and a pit penalty made the going tough, but the duo still came home fifth in the Pro-Am order, meaning they run sixth in the class championship heading into round three.
Donington Park was the scene of superb British GT debuts for both Smith and Jundu last season. Smith showed great adaption to British racing by qualifying the 720S GT3 fourth in his first competitive session this side of the Atlantic. While Jundu celebrated both GT4 Pro-Am pole position and a breakthrough victory aboard Paddock’s 570S GT4 after stepping up to British GT from the GT Cup.
Both crews will be hoping to build on that and bring home strong results this weekend.
Team boss and GT3 driver Martin Plowman says: “Donington Park is the team’s home track, so we’re looking to bounce back from the Silverstone 500, where things outside of our control went against us and made the three-hour race incredibly difficult. However, there were still positives to take from that weekend as Mark drove superbly to nurse the wounded car to the finish and it once again showed that we never give up without a fight! I know we have a great team behind both our GT3 and GT4 cars, and that we can be competitive in both classes around Donington. Mark knows the track from his debut last year, and Kavi was a winner with us on his debut at Donington last year, too, so hopefully it will be a strong weekend for all of us. It’s now time to get our heads down and deliver the sort of result that everybody in the team deserves.”
GT4 racer Kavi Jundu says: “I love Donington Park, it’s a great circuit, and my British GT debut there last year couldn’t have gone better. To score both pole position and then a class win was amazing, so I’ve got some really fond memories of the track. With the Artura being a brand-new car for this year it’s been a race between teams to find the best from the setup. Perhaps we’ve struggled to unlock the secrets as fast as some others, but we’ve made some big steps forward recently and we believe we’ve found some real benefits. Our recent test showed we should have a competitive car this weekend, and Tom’s shown strong pace too, so I think we have to go in with eyes on the podium. I’m really looking forward to getting out there.”
The third round of the Intelligent Money British GT Championship gets underway with two free practice sessions on Saturday ahead of qualifying at 16:00. Sunday begins with a short morning warm-up session before the two-hour race ay 13:00. Both qualifying and the race will feature a live stream via the GT World YouTube channel, while live timing is available all weekend on the TSL Timing website.
